Stephanie Jo Kent, CI
--PhD Candidate in Communication, UMass Amherst
Ms. Kent has presented at interpreting and ASL Studies conferences, international conferences on community interpretation, and been invited to speak at European universities. She published several articles and chapters, one of which has been translated into German. Steph's work as a professional interpreter and researcher of communication involves the intersection of discourse and dynamics.

"Deaf Empowerment: An Example of Making a Difference"
A review of lessons Deaf people have taught ASL interpreters and others, which sign language interpreters can now use to challenge/educate spoken language interpreters. Deaf people have the opportunity to be role models and allies to people from other linguistic minority groups - even those who use spoken languages....

Arkady Belozovsky
Lecturer, Educator, Brown University
His teaching experience includes American Sign Language (ASL), Deaf Studies, and Russian Sign Language (RSL) at the university/college levels. His research interests include cultural history of USSR with particular attention to Deaf intellectual history, Deaf Russian-American Studies, curriculum development, second sign language acquisition, sign language pedagogy, cross- and intercultural communication, and comparative linguistics in RSL and ASL.

"Whose ASL is it? Is ASL Culturally & Linguistically Diverse?"
In our 21st century, we have faced many different views in our everyday life. While more Deaf residential schools, clubs, theatres, non-profit organizations are closed or dwindling, we have adapted well to the conditions that we and new technologies (telecommunication and media) have created. However, there are some challenges and questions that are still unanswered. Who measure and make a decision for our ASL community? Who determine signers’ ASL levels? Is there a center of ASL linguistic authority? Deaf Studies? Variations of ASL based on background, education, and ethnicity will be discussed.

"ASL Literacy"
ASLTales won Benjamin Franklin Award 2009
Various theories in ASL Literacy and approaches will be
discussed, followed with Q&A's and open discussion.

Patrick F. McCarthy, M.S.Ed
Assistant Director/Lecturer, Interpretation Program,
University of New Hampshire, Manchester (UNHM)
Mr.McCarthy has been teaching American Sign Language for interpreter students for some 30 years at various community colleges, and universities. He also teaches a course, Introduction to Deaf World, for second Spring semester at University of South Maine, at Portland.

"Our Collective Memory: New England Deaf History"
Highly interactive workshop for participants to contribute to our collective memory bank about local Deaf Leaders in New England since early 1800's. Participants (especially Deaf Elders/Senior Citizens) are strongly encouraged to bring copies of old photos. This flipchart session will be videotaped, and be written as a starting point for further research.

Because of a genetic predisposition, the Bedouin village of El Sayed in southern Israel has an extraordinary number of deaf people. The people of this village never regarded deafness as a handicap. They even created their own sign language. When one child was offered a cochlear implant by the Israeli government, the community was very conflicted...

CONFERENCE RULES

ARTICLE VII ----- RULES OF THE CONFERENCE
SECTION 1.  All Conferences shall be at least one (1) days' duration.

SECTION 2.  Except for additional meetings as provided for in Article I, Section 4. of theBylaws, the Conference will convene each even numbered year. 

SECTION 3.  Order of business, of the Conference, shall include the following:
Call to order by Chair.

Introduction of schedule and speakers by Chair or designee

Announcement of Luncheon by Chair or designee

Announcement of Job Forum panel members by Chair or designee
Complete bid process and accept new committee members for next conference
 by Chair
Complete all relevant tasks to closing the Conference
 by Chair
Obtain duplicate copy of Treasurer's report
 by Chair
Coordinate and close the process for CEUs with CEU sponsor
 by Chair
Chair or designee Announce conference 's next location via yahoogroup and/or flyer
Acknowledge gratitude to Host committee members and vendors
 by Chair
